About Our School

The Roanoke Technical Education Center (ROTEC) is the Career and Technical Education (CTE) center for Roanoke City Public Schools, providing high school students with hands-on, career-focused learning opportunities that prepare them for success after graduation.

At ROTEC, students develop the technical knowledge, academic foundation, and professional skills needed to thrive in today's workforce, pursue higher education, or enter skilled trades. Through industry-relevant instruction and real-world experiences, students graduate not only with a high school diploma, but also with valuable credentials, practical experience, and a competitive advantage in their chosen career pathway. As a result, the Roanoke Valley benefits from a skilled, well-prepared workforce ready to meet the demands of local industries and employers.

Students are encouraged to explore CTE programs during grades 9 and 10 before selecting a career pathway to complete during grades 11 and 12. Many ROTEC programs offer dual enrollment opportunities through Virginia Western Community College, allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school. In addition, every CTE program provides opportunities to earn industry-recognized certifications that enhance college applications and employment prospects.

Students attend ROTEC for their CTE coursework while continuing to take core academic classes at their home high school. In addition to ROTEC, select CTE courses are also offered at William Fleming High School, Patrick Henry High School, Noel C. Taylor Learning Academy, and Forest Park Academy.
