My name is Kathleen Duncan and I am the Principal of the Roanoke Technical Education Center known as ROTEC. We are the Career and Technical Center for all of Roanoke City Public Schools. Students attend class at the Gibboney Center located on the campus of Patrick Henry High School. Students from William Fleming, Patrick Henry, Noel C. Taylor and Forest Park can explore a variety of careers with programs offered in Building Trades, Culinary Arts, Medical Sciences, Pre-Engineering, TV/Video Production, Computer Applications, Teachers for Tomorrow, Welding, Cosmetology, Automotive Repair, Web Design and a variety of courses in the areas of Business and Marketing.
ROTEC is an exciting place to explore and experience careers in a hands-on setting. Courses are competency based and offer students the chance to work in teams, develop leadership traits, build their self confidence and gain "real world skills" that will help them be successful in the future as they graduate into the world of work or transition into college. Most of the ROTEC courses offer students the chance to earn dual enrollment through Virginia Western Community College and all programs offer students the opportunity to earn industry certifications within their program of study.
I am privileged to be the Principal of ROTEC and the CTE Coordinator for the Division. My background started in the medical profession as a Critical Care Respiratory Therapist. I moved to Roanoke after graduating College to take a position at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. During my career I taught College for many years including 7 years at what is now known as the Jefferson College of Health Sciences. Most recently I taught for 10 years at ROTEC in the Health and Medical Sciences department before choosing to return to school to complete a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Virginia Tech. I proudly accepted the position as ROTEC Principal in July 2009.
The past three years has brought many successes including students earning over 1200 industry certifications and countless regional, state and national competitions. Additionally, our graduation rate is at an all time high of 93.91%
The students and teachers make ROTEC a very special place. Check out our website and visit us on Facebook at
